EU to Apply Stricter Regulation to ChatGPT

OpenAI's ChatGPT will face increased regulatory scrutiny in the European Union, having been designated a Very Large Online Service under the bloc's Digital Services Act (DSA).

The classification mandates that OpenAI actively mitigate risks associated with ChatGPT, particularly concerning its impact on minors, user mental health, and the dissemination of illegal content. The DSA aims to increase transparency and accountability for major online platforms.

Alongside ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox have also been identified as Very Large Online Platforms under the DSA. The act imposes specific restrictions, including prohibitions on targeted advertising towards minors and the use of sensitive personal data such as sexual orientation or religious beliefs for advertising purposes.

The new regulations require platforms to implement robust content moderation systems and user protection measures. Companies have a period to comply with the DSA's requirements, which are part of the EU's broader strategy to govern the digital space.
