EuropaWire: Hydro and Mercedes-Benz Expand Low-Carbon Aluminium Partnership

EuropaWire: Aluminium producer Hydro and automotive manufacturer Mercedes-Benz are expanding their partnership in Europe to reduce the carbon footprint of vehicle production. The collaboration focuses on increasing the use of recycled and renewable-energy-powered aluminium for future electric vehicle generations.

Mercedes-Benz will be the first automotive company in Europe to integrate Hydro's Hydro CIRCAL into series production. This recycled aluminium is made with at least 75% post-consumer scrap, derived from sources like end-of-life vehicles and infrastructure. The process supports circular economy principles by extending aluminium's lifecycle and reducing reliance on new raw materials.

As part of the initiative, the companies are also continuing to utilize Hydro REDUXA, a primary aluminium produced using renewable energy. Hydro states this material has a carbon footprint over 70% lower than the global average. The partnership aims to leverage both recycled and low-carbon primary aluminium without compromising vehicle quality or safety standards.

The expanded cooperation builds on previous agreements dating back to 2022 and a 2024 extension covering the full aluminium value chain. It also includes initiatives like the Corridor Program in Brazil, which combines decarbonisation efforts with social responsibility within the supply chain. This move addresses the automotive industry's growing demand for more sustainable supply chains and resilient manufacturing.
