The European Space Agency (ESA) is continuing development of its robotic mission to Venus, Envision, after NASA officials determined they could not fulfill a commitment to provide a U.S.-built radar instrument for the spacecraft. The mission's project scientist confirmed that ESA will now proceed with the project alone.

The Envision orbiter aims to map Venus's surface at 10 times higher resolution than the last radar mission sent to the planet by NASA in the 1990s. Venus is shrouded in a thick blanket of sulfuric acid clouds, preventing optical cameras from seeing the surface. Radar is the most effective method for penetrating these clouds to reveal the terrain below, with scientists hoping Envision will identify signs of active volcanism.

Originally, NASA and ESA signed a memorandum of understanding in 2024 outlining their partnership on Envision. NASA had agreed to supply a U.S.-made synthetic aperture radar instrument, Envision's primary mapping tool, and provide tracking and communications support via NASA's Deep Space Network. In return, ESA would include U.S. researchers on Envision's science team. ESA would construct the Envision spacecraft, its remaining science instruments, and provide the launch aboard an Ariane 6 rocket.

NASA's decision to withdraw its instrument contribution significantly alters the original plan. While the specific reasons for NASA's inability to meet its commitment have not been detailed, ESA must now seek alternative solutions or develop the radar instrument itself. This change may impact the mission's timeline and overall costs.
