European Central Bank Receives Humorous Euro Banknote Designs Online
The European Central Bank's (ECB) call for input on new euro banknote designs has generated creative and humorous public suggestions on social media.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has received a wave of unconventional design proposals for the next series of euro banknotes following its public outreach for input. The financial institution, responsible for the EU's currency, invited public participation to help shape the future look of the euro.
As part of an effort to make the design process more collaborative, the ECB launched a survey and social media campaign to gather public opinion on potential themes. The shortlisted themes include "rivers and birds" and "European culture." The cultural theme would feature prominent European figures such as Maria Callas and Marie Curie, while the nature-themed option focuses on European birds and landscapes. The ECB stated that new designs also help incorporate advanced anti-counterfeiting technology.
While the ECB is moving forward with expert-selected proposals, social media users have taken the opportunity to share their own, often humorous, alternatives. Suggestions have ranged from showcasing famous European landmarks like the Sagrada Familia and the Acropolis to satirically referencing EU regulations, such as the attached caps on plastic bottles.
The response has been marked by widespread humor, with users posting mockups featuring everything from anime characters and pets to ironic commentary on economic conditions, such as "in Inflation we trust" and "delayed but still expensive." While these unofficial submissions are not expected to be adopted, they have significantly boosted attention and engagement surrounding the banknote redesign process.
The ECB's survey has garnered over 17 million views on social media platforms. The official public consultation period for the banknote designs remains open until September 21, 2026.
