Europe's defence industry experienced substantial growth in 2024, with direct employment reaching a record 1.1 million people, as detailed in the annual Facts and Figures report by the Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD). The sector collectively supported nearly 4.2 million jobs and generated €779 billion in economic activity across the continent.
The report highlights the sector's critical role in European economic stability, sovereignty, and security. Growth in the defence sector specifically rose by 13.8%, an increase attributed by ASD to heightened geopolitical tensions and security concerns across Europe, leading to increased defense spending and investment by member states.
ASD, representing over 4,000 companies in 21 European countries, aims to foster a secure and innovative industrial ecosystem. While the defence sector showed robust expansion, the aerospace and security sectors also experienced growth, albeit at a more moderate pace.
The current geopolitical climate has been a significant factor driving the industry's performance. Increased defense budgets and the modernization needs of armed forces are key drivers, supporting the sector's positive outlook for future development.
