European Patent Office Upholds Carbon's Dual-Cure 3D Printing Patent
The European Patent Office's Board of Appeal has rejected a competitor's challenge to Carbon's foundational dual-cure 3D printing patent.

3D printing company Carbon has received confirmation from the European Patent Office (EPO) Board of Appeal regarding its foundational dual-cure 3D printing patent. The board rejected a competitor's challenge and upheld the patent's broadest claim, restoring additional dependent claims that had been previously removed.
Carbon's dual-cure technology combines light-based printing with a secondary thermal curing reaction. This process enables the production of materials with engineering-grade strength, elasticity, durability, and temperature resistance. The technology is utilized across the automotive, dental, medical, and consumer product manufacturing sectors.
"This decision confirms the strength and breadth of the innovation that is foundational to Carbon's platform," said Carbon CEO Philip DeSimone. "Dual-cure chemistry enables the production of high-performance end-use products that previously were difficult or impractical to produce with other 3D printing technologies. We will continue to invest in and protect our innovations as we advance digital manufacturing."
The EPO decision pertains to European Patent No. 3158400. The company has previously secured similar patent protections in other global markets.
