European Wero Payment System Targets Broader Retail Integration
The Wero payment system, supported by Finanz Informatik, is expanding its reach across Europe. The platform now serves 51 million potential users and is moving toward physical point-of-sale adoption.

The European Payments Initiative (EPI) continues the rollout of Wero, a payment system backed by a coalition of European banks, including Germany's Sparkasse group. The service is currently available to approximately 51 million people across Europe, with over six million users registered in Germany alone.
Designed as an alternative to non-European providers such as Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal, Wero facilitates instant account-to-account payments. Because transactions are processed directly from bank accounts, users do not require third-party digital wallets. Additionally, the system aims to lower transaction costs for merchants compared to established market incumbents.
Following its integration into online shopping channels in late 2025, Wero is scheduled for further expansion in 2026. Developers are currently working on integrating the service into physical point-of-sale (POS) terminals. This rollout aims to position Wero as a comprehensive payment standard for both digital commerce and traditional retail environments.
