Every Electric Provides Free Batteries for Window Air Conditioners in NYC
Every Electric is distributing free batteries to New York City households, enabling continued use of window air conditioners during peak demand periods without energy restrictions.
Startup Every Electric has supplied approximately 1,000 New York City households with free batteries, allowing them to operate window air conditioners during peak energy demand periods. The program enables participants to keep their air conditioners running as usual and earn money through a demand response program with utility Con Edison.
Traditionally, New York City residents participating in demand response programs would precool their apartments and then shut off air conditioners during designated high-usage times. This past summer, however, participants in Every Electric's program were able to run their units continuously, even during a heat dome event with temperatures in the 90s Fahrenheit.
The Every Electric system involves delivering batteries to homes, which are plugged into standard wall outlets. Residents then plug their window air conditioners into these batteries. This setup allows for uninterrupted cooling during heat waves while also contributing to grid stability and generating income for the households.
The initiative aims to help New Yorkers manage extreme heat more comfortably while supporting the city's energy infrastructure. Every Electric intends to expand its program to include more households in the future.
