Evonik Expands Advanced Drug Manufacturing Capacity in Vancouver
Evonik is investing over CAD 150 million in a new GMP drug product manufacturing facility in Vancouver, Canada. The facility is set to more than triple the company's production capacity for advanced lipid-based pharmaceuticals.
German specialty chemicals company Evonik is investing more than CAD 150 million (approximately EUR 93 million) in a new GMP drug product manufacturing facility in Vancouver, Canada. Production at the facility, which focuses on lipid-based drug delivery, is slated to begin by the end of 2029.
The expansion is expected to more than triple Evonik's current manufacturing capacity for advanced pharmaceutical products. The new site will also enhance quality control and microbiological testing capabilities. The Canadian federal government is supporting the project through its Strategic Innovation Fund with up to CAD 68 million (around EUR 42 million).
The facility will support pharmaceutical and biotech customers developing lipid-based medicines, including vaccines, therapeutics, and mRNA-based products, from development through commercial scale. Evonik stated the expansion builds on the capabilities of its Vancouver Laboratories, formerly Transferra Nanosciences and Northern Lipids.
The investment was announced on August 27 by Canada's Minister of Industry, Mélanie Joly, and Guido Skudlarek, head of Evonik's Health Care business line. Minister Joly highlighted that the investment strengthens Canada's leadership in life sciences and will create highly skilled jobs.
