German specialty chemicals company Evonik has expanded its drug delivery capabilities with the opening of a new Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliant manufacturing facility in Vancouver, Canada. The investment aims to meet increasing demand for lipid-based drug delivery solutions, particularly in the development and clinical manufacturing of lipid nanoparticle (LNP) products.
The facility represents an investment of over 150 million Canadian dollars (approximately 93 million euros). The project is also supported by external funding potentially reaching up to 68 million Canadian dollars (approximately 42 million euros). Evonik stated the new plant will enable a faster transition from drug development to commercial production and enhance the company's position in the sector.
The Vancouver location was chosen due to its proximity to several prominent biotechnology companies and research centers, facilitating collaboration and access to expertise. LNP technology is a key component in the development of various novel therapies, including mRNA vaccines, and Evonik's expansion seeks to capitalize on this growing market need.
While Evonik has made previous investments in similar facilities elsewhere, the Vancouver site is noted as the company's largest single investment in this specific business area. The company anticipates the new facility will strengthen its offerings as a global partner in drug development.
