Shawn Layden, former President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, has explained the company's past strategy of porting PlayStation games to PC. According to Layden, the main objective of these ports was not direct profit generation, but rather to expand the recognition of the brand and its intellectual property (IP) beyond its ecosystem.

"Frankly, when I was there, this PC porting strategy was not about making money," Layden stated in an interview with IGN. He emphasized the effort to bring PlayStation's game worlds to a wider audience, including those who did not own a PlayStation console. The aim was for IPs to break free from Sony's own ecosystem and reach a broader demographic.

Layden compared the strategy to the expansion of film and TV productions. If stories are told solely to PlayStation players, bringing them to other media like movies or series can be challenging. Wider recognition across different platforms helps build a bridge between these varied mediums.

He also noted that players who chose the PC version of a PlayStation game were likely not going to buy a PlayStation 5 console anyway. Since PC versions were often released later, the most eager players would have already acquired the console for immediate access.

Layden's comments shed light on Sony's strategy for increasing the value of its IPs and leveraging them more broadly outside the gaming industry, while console sales support remained important.
