EXP and partners to design Île-d’Orléans bridge
EXP, alongside SYSTRA Canada and Egis in Canada, has been selected for the first design phase of a new cable-stayed bridge at Île-d’Orléans, Quebec.
Transports Québec has awarded EXP, in a consortium with SYSTRA Canada and Egis in Canada, the contract for the definitive preliminary study of the new Île-d’Orléans cable-stayed bridge. The project involves refining the design for the new structure that will connect the island to the north shore of the St. Lawrence River.
The existing bridge, built in 1935, no longer meets current requirements. The new 2.1-kilometer cable-stayed bridge will be constructed west of the current structure. It will feature wider traffic lanes, shoulders suitable for heavy vehicles, and a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.
The design aims to reflect the maritime history of Île-d’Orléans while emphasizing the river and the natural landscape. Sustainability requirements and local weather conditions were also key considerations in the design process.
Preparatory work is scheduled to commence in 2022, with the bridge expected to be commissioned by late 2027. The selection of the EXP-led consortium followed a public tender process and an expert committee's evaluation of three submitted proposals.
