Expansion of AI infrastructure contributes to rising consumer costs

The rapid scaling of artificial intelligence infrastructure is creating unintended economic ripple effects that are increasing costs for the average consumer. Moody’s Analytics estimates that inflationary pressures tied to AI development now force households to pay over $375 more for the same goods and services compared to the previous year.

A primary factor is energy consumption. According to data from the MIT Energy Initiative, AI data centers accounted for roughly 4.4% of U.S. electricity consumption in 2023. As utility providers struggle to meet the massive power demands of these facilities, those costs are increasingly being passed down to residential customers.

Supply chains are also facing significant pressure. The surge in construction of data centers has diverted resources away from housing projects, causing a spike in the price of materials such as copper and electrical wiring. Simultaneously, high-bandwidth memory chips, which are critical for AI operations, have become scarce, leading to increased costs for consumer electronics including laptops and smartphones.

Beyond direct price increases, the labor market faces disruption. Boston Consulting Group projections suggest that 10% to 15% of U.S. jobs may be replaced by AI within five years. While the nature of work evolves, these factors collectively indicate that the economic footprint of AI extends well beyond the technology sector itself.
