A New York University study found that nearly one in four white-collar professionals have not received a significant promotion or raise in five years, a phenomenon researchers term "mid-career stall." This suggests a structural shift affecting established career paths.
Experts note that the conventional approach of adding to a resume, such as new certifications or degrees, is less effective for experienced professionals. The most valuable opportunities at this career stage are found outside standard job boards, in what is termed the "hidden market."
The "hidden market" encompasses consulting engagements, advisory roles, board positions, speaking invitations, equity arrangements, and other income streams, collectively accounting for an estimated 70% to 80% of meaningful career advancements for experienced individuals. These opportunities often arise from established relationships and built reputation rather than formal postings.
Analysis indicates that prolonged professional stagnation can negatively impact identity and career autonomy. Over-reliance on titles or institutions makes it challenging for professionals to navigate career changes when traditional ladders shorten.
