Experts Call for Earlier Diagnosis of Secondary Immunodeficiencies at ESID 2026

Maastricht, Netherlands – Healthcare professionals at the ESID 2026 conference are urging for increased attention and earlier diagnosis of secondary immunodeficiencies (SID). These conditions, often a consequence of immunosuppressive therapies, biological treatments, and advances in cancer care, are becoming more prevalent and clinically significant.

The experts highlighted that SIDs are frequently identified late or remain undiagnosed, leading to severe infections, hospitalizations, reduced quality of life, and other preventable complications. Key priorities identified include raising awareness, promoting timely diagnosis, and ensuring uniform standards of care to improve patient outcomes.

Johan Prevot, CEO of IPOPI, stated that while awareness of SIDs is growing, significant disparities exist across countries in diagnosis and patient support. He also noted that some patients diagnosed with SID may actually have an underlying, previously undiagnosed primary immunodeficiency.

Kedrion Biopharma presented two posters at the congress, one detailing safety data for an immunoglobulin therapy and another on the international expansion of the MAPPA survey initiative. The MAPPA survey, a collaboration with AIP APS, collects real-world data on the experiences of individuals with primary immunodeficiencies. Preliminary findings indicate over half of respondents received their diagnosis after age 18, with 28% reporting permanent damage at the time of diagnosis.
