Experts Share Tips to Reduce Mosquito Exposure Amid Early West Nile Virus Season

As the United States experiences an earlier than typical start to the West Nile virus season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) has released guidance on protective measures. The NPMA recommends four key strategies for reducing exposure to mosquitoes throughout the summer months.

These strategies include consistent application of EPA-registered insect repellents when spending time outdoors, limiting outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours (typically dawn and dusk), ensuring window and door screens are intact to prevent entry into homes, and eliminating sources of standing water where mosquitoes breed.

West Nile virus is primarily transmitted by infected mosquitoes. While many infections are asymptomatic, some individuals may develop symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, and potentially a rash. In rare cases, the virus can lead to serious neurological illness.

The NPMA emphasizes that proactive prevention by individuals and communities is crucial in managing the risk associated with West Nile virus. This includes routine checks of yards and surrounding areas for potential mosquito breeding grounds.
