Experts Train AI for Supplemental Income
Companies developing AI models are hiring professionals to refine their systems. One medical expert describes the work as flexible and professionally rewarding.

Companies developing artificial intelligence (AI) are increasingly engaging domain experts to train and refine their models. Courtney Fahnhorst, a specialist in wound care and hyperbaric medicine in Florida, is among those contributing their expertise.
Fahnhorst found the opportunity through a LinkedIn advertisement and began assisting Mercor, an AI company, in training its models. Her role involves evaluating AI responses to clinical scenarios, identifying errors and misconceptions. She finds the work flexible, competitively compensated, and a means to build capital for her future private practice.
Heidi Hagberg, Mercor's head of communications, explained that AI models like ChatGPT and Gemini need to provide accurate and relevant responses, necessitating expert input for verification. Mercor partners with leading AI firms, fast-growing startups, and Fortune 500 enterprises.
Other companies facilitating supplemental income for experts through AI training include Alignerr, Data Annotation, and Outlier. While manually teaching technology is not new, the scale and speed of this industry have surged with AI's rapid advancement.
Previously, data labeling involved tasks like outlining objects for autonomous vehicles. Current AI models, however, demand deeper expertise as agents undertake multi-step processes across various platforms. Companies are also seeking experts to develop AI tools for customer service and market research.
