Explosive-laden drone discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport
Authorities are investigating a security incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport after a drone carrying explosives was found near a Ukrainian cargo plane. The investigation is treating the case as a potential terror threat.

German authorities have launched a formal investigation following the discovery of an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The device was found by airport staff on the facility’s southern runway near a parked Ukrainian freighter. Federal police specialists successfully neutralized the threat by removing the drone’s detonator.
The case has been transferred to the General Prosecutor's Office in Dresden and the state police's counter-terrorism unit. Forensic analysis confirmed the presence of high-grade military explosives, including PETN and Semtex, within the device. Officials have not ruled out politically motivated sabotage, characterizing the airport as critical infrastructure.
Concurrent with the drone discovery, a secondary incident occurred involving a DHL cargo plane, which reportedly sustained minor damage after striking an unidentified flying object upon takeoff. The aircraft was diverted to Hanover for inspection. Authorities are currently examining whether a link exists between the two events.
Security experts indicate that this marks a significant shift, as the use of an armed, weaponized drone of this nature has not been previously documented in a public security incident within Germany. An investigation portal has been established to gather witness reports from the time of the incident.
