Extreme Heat in Saxony: Fires, Warnings, and Weather Forecasts
Saxony is experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Prolonged drought and high temperatures are fueling forest fires and increasing the strain on healthcare.

Germany's Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) is reporting on the ongoing extreme heatwave in Saxony, where temperatures are forecast to reach over 40 degrees Celsius on Sunday. This marks the fifth consecutive day of significant heat stress, particularly affecting the elderly and those requiring care.
Fires and Firefighting Efforts MDR reported that approximately 16 hectares of forest were burning in Gohrischheide. Firefighting crews have contained the spread of the fire, but the area, which has a history of being ammunition-contaminated and previously burned in 2022, presents challenges. The dry conditions and wind have caused new growth, such as shrubs and grasses, to ignite easily. Additional firefighters and technical relief units are being deployed, and aerial firefighting is underway with police helicopters. Fire officials anticipate rising temperatures and gusty winds, which could impact operations. The primary goal is to keep the fire contained until rainfall can provide relief.
Healthcare Strain and Cooling Centers The strain on local healthcare systems is evident, with Saxony's hospital association reporting an approximate 20% increase in patient numbers at emergency rooms due to heat-related illnesses. Experts advise residents to avoid direct sun exposure, stay hydrated, and keep indoor spaces cool.
Dresden, recognized as a heat island, has seen the VG Biomarkt consumer cooperative open its air-conditioned facilities for free public access. Additionally, numerous churches across Saxony are opening their doors as cool refuges during the day.
Water Use Restrictions The city of Chemnitz has issued a public appeal to refrain from extracting water from flowing surface waters. The persistent drought and low water levels of rivers and streams mean that even minor water withdrawals can negatively impact the aquatic ecosystem, as documented by the State Water Center.
Park Maintenance Amidst Heat In Eastern Saxony, new heat records are anticipated. At the Muskauer Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, groundskeepers are struggling to water new plantings and flowers amidst the dry conditions. While newly planted trees require watering for several years, the ancient trees within the park must withstand the conditions independently.
