F-Droid app store receives major update after a decade

F-Droid, a community-driven platform for free and open-source Android applications, has launched version 2.0 of its official app store client. The update, the most substantial in a decade, aims to enhance the user experience and streamline the discovery and installation of open-source apps.

The new F-Droid client has been rebuilt from the ground up using Kotlin Compose, the modern standard for Android development. This change makes the interface more responsive and includes optional support for Android's Material Design theming. The user interface has also been significantly cleaned up, providing easier access to core functions.

Beyond the visual improvements, the update focuses on making it simpler to find and install applications. F-Droid's repository has grown to host thousands of open-source apps. Unlike the Google Play Store, F-Droid does not track user activity for targeted ads or suggestions, positioning itself as a privacy-focused channel for app acquisition.

F-Droid 2.0 is rolling out gradually. The update is expected to increase the platform's appeal to users seeking alternatives to mainstream app stores who prioritize privacy and open-source software.
