FAA begins phase-out of floppy disk technology in air traffic control upgrade

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced a significant technical overhaul of its air traffic control infrastructure, specifically targeting the removal of floppy disk-based systems. These legacy components, some of which date back to the 1980s, are being replaced by the new Enterprise Information Display System (E-IDS).

The rollout will encompass 435 facilities, providing air traffic controllers with faster and more reliable access to essential weather and flight safety data. The current reliance on aging magnetic media has long been a point of concern regarding data retrieval speeds and overall system maintenance.

By deploying E-IDS, the agency aims to streamline operations across all air traffic domains. This modernization effort is intended to ensure that critical aeronautical information is processed using contemporary digital standards, reducing the risks associated with hardware obsolescence.
