The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is poised to implement an AI tool, valued at $875 million, designed to aid air traffic controllers in navigating congestion within the airspace surrounding Washington, D.C. This deployment is intended as the first step toward a broader nationwide rollout, eventually covering the 29 million square miles of U.S. national airspace under the FAA's purview.

The SMART system, as described by the FAA, utilizes AI models to forecast air traffic flows and identify potential conflicts. These predictions are based on operational factors including airline schedules, weather conditions, airport capacity, and prevailing airspace conditions. U.S. government and industry officials informed The Wall Street Journal that SMART could see its debut at the three major airports serving the Washington, D.C. area as early as Monday, September 21.

Philip Mann, principal consultant at Vector Strategic Consulting LLC and an advisor on aviation safety and AI governance, called the decision to launch SMART in a limited scope prior to a nationwide expansion "the right call." Mann has extensive experience with the FAA, having held multiple roles within the agency for 17 years. The integration of AI technology in aviation aims to enhance safety and efficiency amidst increasing air traffic.
