FAA Proposes Airworthiness Directive for Boeing 737 MAX Seat Issues
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing an airworthiness directive for certain Boeing 737 MAX aircraft due to reports of improperly installed passenger seats.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on July 27 that it is proposing a new airworthiness directive for certain Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, including the 737-8, 737-9, and 737-8200 models. The action follows reports indicating a potential improper installation of passenger seat assemblies.
According to the FAA, information received suggests that the seat track assemblies on the affected aircraft models may not have been correctly installed in the seat rails. Specifically, the rear attachment fitting's bungee pin may not have been properly lowered or engaged with the seat rail. Improperly installed seat assemblies could detach from the seat rails under increased load, turbulence, or during an emergency landing, potentially causing injury to passengers or crew and obstructing aisles, which would delay evacuation.
The FAA estimates that this proposed airworthiness directive would affect 453 aircraft registered in the United States. Globally, approximately 2300 737 MAX aircraft are in service, with 823 of them based in the U.S. The proposed directive aims to ensure the correct installation and secure fastening of these seats to maintain passenger and crew safety during all phases of flight.
