Fake animal rescues on social media raise concerns

Fake animal rescue videos are circulating on social media, with some animals reportedly put in danger deliberately to create sensational content. According to the German Animal Welfare Association, creators may exploit animals to produce spectacular rescue videos that encourage sharing and viewing, often without viewers realizing the distress caused to the animal.

These staged situations do not typically reflect the real-life challenges animals face. Kerstin van Kan from the German Animal Welfare Association explained that by observing an animal's body language, one can discern if a scene is authentic. Signs of stress, such as dilated pupils, body aversion, excessive licking, or fearful and aggressive behavior, can indicate that the video depicts animal welfare issues.

Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram contribute to the proliferation of such content. Algorithms are known to favor emotionally charged and attention-grabbing material, giving staged rescue videos and other problematic animal portrayals significant visibility. This can shift perceptions of normalcy and reduce critical scrutiny.

Furthermore, many content creators fail to disclose if they are showcasing animals suffering from traits such as harmful breeding characteristics. Sharing this content can inadvertently increase demand for such breeding practices. Additionally, the ease of online publishing allows anyone to present themselves as an expert, potentially spreading dangerous training tips or animal welfare-unfriendly handling methods without proper context.
