Fake online shopping site FakeHaul offers simulated retail therapy

FakeHaul.com, a new competitor to online marketplaces like Temu, aims to provide the thrill of online shopping without any actual purchases. The site, created by Microsoft AI developer Jack Yang, simulates browsing products, finding deals, and filling a shopping cart. Notably, none of the brands, products, or prices are real, a deliberate design choice.

Yang's goal is to offer users the same dopamine release associated with online retail therapy but without the financial consequences. The inspiration came from observing that for many impulse shoppers, the satisfaction primarily occurs during the browsing, comparing, and adding-to-cart phases. FakeHaul seeks to decouple this ritual from the actual purchase.

FakeHaul is part of an emerging category of "dopamine sites" that replicate the engaging aspects of e-commerce or food delivery apps without real transactions. Similar platforms include FoodNeverComes and Dopamine Shop. Yang initially experimented with variations of real brand names but switched to AI-generated substitutes to avoid legal issues.

The site incorporates features such as a daily "coupon wheel" spin and a shareable receipt for completed fake orders. Yang acknowledges the ethical complexities but hopes these elements encourage users to reframe their shopping behaviors. While some users find FakeHaul helpful for managing urges, others worry that the simulated purchases could reinforce addictive patterns. Yang emphasizes that FakeHaul is not a medical treatment and maintains a kill switch for the site if it proves detrimental.
