A recent incident involving a fallen power line in Northern Virginia exposed a significant challenge within the rapidly expanding data center ecosystem. While the grid typically recovers from such events within seconds, this outage took over 10 minutes to resolve.
The extended recovery time was attributed to more than 3 gigawatts of data center capacity simultaneously ceasing power draw. Data collected by Ting Labs indicated this caused a voltage spike across the PJM grid, affecting the area from Northern Virginia to Chicago.
Although the event did not result in a complete blackout, it caused lights to flicker across the region. The incident highlighted the potential impact of data centers' increasing energy consumption on grid stability, with experts anticipating more frequent occurrences.
