Data from the National Payments Corporation of India shows a 3.89% decline in toll and parking transaction volume for September, even as the cumulative number of issued tags rose to 130.33 million.

Transaction volume for the FASTag system fell to 337.34 million in September, down from 351 million in August, according to the latest figures from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). While usage dipped on a monthly basis, the cumulative number of issued tags grew to 130.33 million, highlighting a discrepancy between the system's reach and immediate transactional activity.

The total value of transactions processed in September reached Rs 7,096.35 crore, a 1.23% decline compared to August. Average daily transactions also saw a slight contraction, dropping to 11.25 million. Despite these monthly fluctuations, year-on-year data suggests steady long-term growth, with transaction volumes and values increasing by 1.38% and 10.52%, respectively, compared to September 2025.

Industry stakeholders and policymakers are currently shifting focus toward infrastructure efficiency. Recent initiatives include the introduction of 'OneTag,' a bank-portability feature launched by Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari designed to allow users to retain their tags when switching financial institutions. Additionally, there are ongoing discussions regarding the integration of traffic fine collections directly into the FASTag ecosystem.
