King Mohammed VI appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as Prime Minister on September 29, 2026, marking the first time a woman has held the head of government position in Morocco. El Mansouri has been tasked with forming a new government.
The appointment follows the September 23 legislative elections, where the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) secured 97 seats in the House of Representatives. According to the constitution, the King appoints the head of government from the party that wins the most seats.
El Mansouri, 50, is an attorney. Her previous roles include Minister of National Territory Planning, Land Planning, Housing and City Policy, and Mayor of Marrakech. She has also been part of PAM's collective leadership.
"The appointment of Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as Morocco's first woman Prime Minister is a historic moment for the Kingdom," stated H.E. Youssef Amrani, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United States. He added that the appointment signifies "an important milestone in Morocco's political life and the continued evolution of its institutions."
The new government will commence its duties as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup and pursues a national agenda focused on growth, infrastructure, and public services.
