Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) launched an updated search function on its website on June 1, 2026, incorporating artificial intelligence. The new system moves beyond simple keyword matching to understand the meaning and context of user queries.

This allows users to submit more complex questions or use natural language without needing to identify precise keywords beforehand. The technology was developed in-house by FAZ's own archive, rather than being outsourced to external technology firms. The search engine indexes articles from faz.net and generates AI-powered answers based on editorial knowledge.

The new intelligent search covers reporting from the past twelve months, focusing on current events. To ensure traceability, every AI-generated answer includes integrated footnotes that directly link to the corresponding articles. This feature aims to make the use of AI transparent and visible connect it to the publication's own reporting.

The digital agency 3pc, a Berlin-based subsidiary of FAZ, was involved in the technical implementation. For more in-depth historical research, FAZ continues to direct users to its comprehensive FAZ archive, which provides access to the publication's entire content history.
