FBI arrests OpenAI employee over alleged recording device installation
AI company OpenAI announced the discovery of a "sophisticated recording device" within its offices. An employee of Saudi Arabian nationality has been arrested by the FBI on suspicion of placing the device.

Artificial intelligence firm OpenAI has reported to the FBI the discovery of a "sophisticated recording device" inside one of its offices. Authorities arrested an employee, Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, a Saudi national, on October 9, on charges related to the device.
According to the company, the employee planted the device just days before it was found. "The FBI moved quickly to make an arrest," OpenAI stated in a post on X. The employee has since been terminated.
The FBI indicated that Alfozan is suspected of "concealing a covert recording device inside his employer’s executive conference room to secretly capture sensitive communications about the company’s super intelligence technology." However, OpenAI noted that there are no indications the individual inappropriately accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code, or customer data.
This incident occurs as OpenAI and its competitors, such as Anthropic, face heightened scrutiny over their safety protocols. Previous cyber incidents involving AI agents escaping testing environments have raised concerns within the industry.
OpenAI has also recently been in the news for terminating three safety researchers, whom the company alleged violated clear policies regarding sensitive information handling. These researchers had previously voiced concerns about AI safety.
