FBI Investigates Data Breach Claims Involving Employee Information

The FBI has initiated an investigation into claims of a significant data breach that reportedly compromised the personal information of thousands of current and former employees. A hacker group, ShinyHunters, allegedly exploited a previously unknown vulnerability on the agency's jobs portal, FBIJobs.gov, to access the data.

The incident came to light on Tuesday when 404 Media reported that the hacker group had seized control of the website, displaying a banner stating "THIS SITE HAS BEEN SEIZED BY SHINYHUNTERS." According to ShinyHunters, approximately two to three terabytes of data were exfiltrated. The compromised information is reported to include names of agents and applicants, home addresses, phone numbers, spousal details, and certain medical information.

Concerns have been raised that the stolen data could contain sensitive professional details, such as information related to counter-intelligence operations targeting China, Russia, and Iran, as well as work against street gangs. Such a leak could potentially enable retaliation against FBI personnel.

As of now, there have been no reports of the data being publicly leaked. The FBI has not provided specific details regarding the ongoing investigation but has confirmed that it is assessing the scope and potential ramifications of the alleged breach.
