Hackers are targeting both adults and minors by compromising social media accounts and personal online profiles. The explicit material is often stolen without the victim's knowledge. Criminals then share or sell this content on community forums or illicit markets, sometimes including the victim's contact information.
These attacks often begin with password guessing and the use of credentials obtained from previous data breaches. While some platforms employ two-factor authentication, attackers are finding ways to bypass these security measures. This can involve social engineering tactics, such as impersonating customer support to trick victims into revealing verification codes.
Once verification codes are obtained, attackers can initiate password reset processes for accounts, gaining unauthorized access. The FBI noted that hackers also create fake websites and email accounts that mimic legitimate services to phish for login credentials, potentially leading to further identity theft and extortion.
The stolen personal information, including names, birth dates, and contact details, can be used to further victimize individuals through sexual extortion. Attackers may demand payment from victims under the threat of broadly releasing their intimate content.
