FCC Plans to Retroactively Ban DJI-Linked Gadgets

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is moving to wield its recently granted power to retroactively ban imported gadgets that have already received U.S. approval. The move specifically targets suspected "front companies" accused of circumventing foreign drone bans to introduce technology from Chinese manufacturer DJI into the United States.

Last Friday, the FCC proposed a $25,000 fine against eight of these "front companies," including those associated with the import and sale of Skyrover drones and Xtra cameras. The commission is now signaling intentions to escalate these actions by planning to ban these same companies from participating in the U.S. market.

This initiative stems from authority the FCC granted itself last October. This authority allows the commission to ban devices that have already been approved for import and sale in the U.S. The current enforcement action is seen as the first major application of this power against entities perceived to be bypassing national security restrictions.

The FCC's stated goal is to close loopholes that allow foreign technology, particularly from China, to enter the U.S. market outside of established regulatory channels. The commission views this as a critical step in safeguarding national security and economic interests.
