FDA Panel Recommends Easing Access to Popular Peptides

A panel of federal health advisers narrowly recommended on Thursday that restrictions be eased on several peptides frequently promoted by wellness influencers and celebrities. The vote comes despite government scientists' warnings that the chemicals lack sufficient evidence of safety and effectiveness for their intended uses.

The panel, composed of outside experts to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), voted 8-6 with one abstention to recommend that injectable peptides, including names like BPC-157, TB-500, and KPV, be added to the FDA's list of substances considered safe for pharmacy compounding. If the FDA follows this advice, experts anticipate an increase in marketing by telehealth companies for wellness and cosmetic applications.

The panel's vote reflected its composition, which included several individuals with ties to the peptide industry. While proponents argued for greater patient and physician control over access, some panel members and FDA scientists expressed concerns about responding to market demand rather than established scientific data. FDA staff scientists noted a lack of robust human studies for some peptides and questioned the verifiable identity of others, citing risks of infection, allergic reactions, or other harms.
