Federal Agency Investigates Possible Defect in 1.2 Million Tesla Vehicles

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a formal investigation into a potential manufacturing defect that could affect approximately 1.2 million of Tesla's most popular vehicle models. The probe was initiated following 156 consumer complaints alleging a suspension component detachment that compromised steering control.

If confirmed, the defect could impact all U.S. sales of the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV. According to the NHTSA, the faulty component may lead to a loss of steering capability while driving, posing a significant safety risk to occupants.

Tesla has not yet issued an official statement regarding the ongoing investigation. Neither the company nor its CEO, Elon Musk, have publicly commented on the matter. The NHTSA intends to gather further data and conduct tests to assess the scope of the issue and determine necessary corrective actions.

This investigation could potentially result in a large-scale recall if the defect is found to be widespread. The NHTSA has previously scrutinized safety aspects of Tesla vehicles, including the performance of its Autopilot driver-assistance system.
