Feds Investigate Tesla Robotaxis for Speeding in School Zones
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is evaluating reports that Tesla's robotaxis may be exceeding speed limits in active school zones.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating allegations that Tesla's robotaxis are exceeding speed limits in school zones. The agency is evaluating reports concerning approximately 1,000 Tesla robotaxis that allegedly use the automated driving system (ADS) to drive faster than posted limits in active school zones.
The investigation was initiated following a petition received on September 23, 2026. The petition requested that NHTSA investigate model year 2026 Tesla Robotaxis, specifically the Model Y and Cybercab, when their ADS is engaged. The petitioner alleged that the system exceeds posted speed limits.
NHTSA has confirmed that it receives regular updates and reports on the performance of automated driving systems. Rival Waymo's robotaxis have also faced similar inquiries, including allegations of illegally passing school buses and striking a child near a California elementary school.
