Fervo Energy Begins Electricity Sales From Geothermal Plant

Geothermal energy company Fervo Energy announced on Thursday that it has begun selling electricity from its Cape Station power plant to the grid, completing the facility ahead of schedule on September 30.

This milestone makes Fervo the first enhanced geothermal company to achieve commercial operation. The plant synchronized with the grid about a week prior, bringing online the first third of what will be a 100-megawatt facility. The entire site has the potential to generate up to 4 gigawatts of electricity.

Fervo co-founder and CEO Tim Latimer stated that the project was completed in 23 months from groundbreaking to commercial operations. The company aims to reduce the construction time for future phases to as little as 18 months, a pace designed to appeal to data center operators seeking reliable power sources.

The modular development of geothermal energy, similar to data centers, allows for phased build-outs that can scale with demand. This approach has already secured power purchase agreements with major clients, including Google and Southern California Edison.
