Fidji Simo steps down from leading OpenAI's AGI work due to illness

Fidji Simo, who led OpenAI's Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) efforts, is stepping down from her full-time role as chief of AGI development. She will transition to a part-time advisory position, as announced on social media platform X. This move comes after Simo initially announced in April that she would take a few weeks of medical leave to address a neuroimmune condition, shortly after assuming the AGI chief title. Previously, she served as the company's chief executive officer of applications.

Simo's departure from a key leadership role is part of recent organizational shifts at OpenAI. Earlier in the month, Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap also stepped down from his operational duties to focus on "special projects." Additionally, Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch resigned her position to focus on her health, with plans to return to a "more narrowly scoped role" once her condition improves.

The departures and role changes among senior leadership raise questions about the stability and direction of OpenAI's ambitious AGI development goals. The company aims to create artificial general intelligence that can match human cognitive abilities in rational decision-making.
