The International Mathematical Union (IMU) announced the recipients of the 2026 Fields Medals during the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia. The awards, often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics," are given to mathematicians under the age of 40 who have demonstrated exceptional talent and future promise.

This year's recipients include Yu Deng of China (University of Chicago), John Pardon of the United States (Stony Brook University), Jacob Tsimerman of Canada (University of Toronto), and Hong Wang of China/France (New York University/IHES). Each winner receives 15,000 Canadian dollars and a gold medal.

"The four medalists exemplify the depth, originality, and vitality of contemporary mathematics, and we are delighted to celebrate their achievements at the International Congress of Mathematicians," said Hiraku Nakajima, president of the IMU. The Fields Medal is awarded every four years.

During the ceremony, other significant mathematics prizes were also presented, including the Abacus Medal to Shayan Oveis Gharan, the Chern Medal to Graeme Segal, the Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize to Yurii Nesterov, and the Leelavati Prize to Hannah Fry. These awards highlight the importance of various fields within mathematics and its broad impact on science and society.
