Fieldston Power Expands Rooftop Solar Network in New York City

Fieldston Power, a startup focused on transforming the rooftops of New York City's rent-stabilized apartment buildings into distributed solar power plants, has announced a significant expansion. The company has secured a $200 million pipeline of new projects, which are expected to increase its current capacity approximately tenfold.

The company targets older, often 1920s- or 1930s-era rent-stabilized buildings that typically require substantial repairs, such as roof remediation. Fieldston Power finances these necessary repairs by installing solar panels on the rooftops and selling the generated electricity to the grid. In return, building owners receive a roof replacement with no upfront cost and a 20-year warranty.

This model has proven successful, with Fieldston Power having already implemented similar projects across more than 70 buildings in New York City. These community solar projects also offer savings on electricity bills for low-income renters. Furthermore, they assist buildings in complying with New York City's Local Law 97, which mandates emissions reductions for large buildings.

Fieldston Power aims to address multiple urban challenges: it improves aging infrastructure, helps buildings meet environmental regulations, alleviates energy affordability issues by providing cheaper electricity, and enhances the city's grid efficiency. By operating at a larger scale and bundling installations, the company creates projects substantial enough to attract institutional investors who might otherwise overlook smaller-scale solar developments.
