Naoki Hamaguchi, lead developer for Final Fantasy VII: Revelation, has provided insights into the game's combat system in an interview with Eurogamer. Hamaguchi described the hybrid combat system in the preceding game, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, as perfected but emphasized the need to introduce new elements in Revelation to avoid it feeling like a rehash.

Hamaguchi revealed the inclusion of the FITS (Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear) system in Final Fantasy VII: Revelation. This system functions as an advanced job system, allowing players to select different roles for each character, thereby adding strategic depth to combat encounters.

Early in the development process, Hamaguchi discussed the design with combat director Teruki Endo to grant players greater freedom. Beyond the combat system, the game's open world is designed to allow players to explore with considerable freedom, while still providing sufficient guidance to prevent players from becoming lost.

The introduction of the FITS system and the expanded world aims to enhance the player experience and mitigate potential "open world fatigue." The development of Final Fantasy VII: Revelation focuses on balancing player freedom with game direction.
