Finanz Informatik acquires Web Computing to drive AI adoption in banking

Finanz Informatik (FI), the central IT provider for the German savings bank group, has acquired the Münster-based AI engineering firm Web Computing. The move aims to accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence within the group's IT architecture, leveraging Web Computing’s expertise in data analytics and generative AI.

As part of the integration, FI is launching a pilot version of an AI assistant this summer. Designed to assist bank staff, the tool automates routine tasks such as document analysis, text generation for customer communications, and processing voice recordings. This pilot is a key step in FI’s broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency across the savings bank network.

Andreas Schelling, CEO of Finanz Informatik, emphasized that the acquisition is driven by a need for digital sovereignty. The company intends to operate pre-trained open-source AI models within its own data centers rather than relying on public clouds. This approach is intended to ensure that highly sensitive financial data remains protected and compliant with strict banking regulations.

Looking ahead, FI plans to embed these AI capabilities deep into its core banking platform, OSPlus, which serves approximately 50 million customers across various German financial institutions.
