Finanz Informatik Develops Bespoke AI Solutions for Sparkassen Banks

Finanz Informatik, the digital partner for the Sparkasse financial group, has introduced a bespoke artificial intelligence strategy designed to meet the specific needs of its banking clients. Moving away from generic, large-scale AI tools, the company is offering solutions precisely calibrated for the specialized financial environment of Sparkassen employees.

The company has a history of implementing AI, utilizing 'classical AI' in areas like online banking and mobile apps for functions such as transaction categorization and photo transfers. A notable example is KIWI, an anti-phishing solution that analyzes transactions based on numerous criteria to identify risks, thereby improving process efficiency and security.

With the advent of generative AI and large language models, Finanz Informatik is launching the S-KI Pilot platform. This central interface provides Sparkassen employees with direct support at their workstations, facilitating faster access to relevant information and assisting in various tasks without replacing human expertise. The focus is on simplifying processes and enhancing the quality of outcomes.

A key tenet of this strategy is 'AI sovereignty'. Finanz Informatik is developing these AI solutions internally, leveraging its own private cloud infrastructure and data centers, rather than relying on global cloud providers. This approach ensures that sensitive Sparkassen and customer data remains secure within their own IT environment and complies fully with EU regulations, including the EU AI Act.

The company asserts that economies of scale prevent costs from exceeding those of external cloud providers, while offering significant advantages in data security, up-to-date information, and regulatory adherence. To facilitate this, their data centers have been upgraded with AI accelerators (GPUs). Furthermore, to mitigate the risk of vendor lock-in and dependency on foreign providers, Finanz Informatik has acquired Web Computing GmbH, a specialist in bank-specific AI applications, which will operate as an independent subsidiary.
