Finnair Reports Stronger Than Usual First Quarter Results

Helsinki – Finnair's financial performance in the first quarter of 2026 demonstrated a notable improvement compared to the same period in the prior year. The company's revenue grew by 12.1% to reach 778.1 million euros. Despite this quarter typically being the weakest seasonally for airlines, Finnair's comparable operating result saw a substantial enhancement, moving from a loss of -62.6 million euros in Q1 2025 to -0.6 million euros in the current quarter.

The improved result was attributed to effective cost management and robust demand, particularly on routes to Asia. From March onwards, increased demand for Asian travel helped to mitigate the impact of rising jet fuel prices. The airline carried 2.8 million passengers, a 7.3% increase, with a passenger load factor rising to 78.0%.

Geopolitical events in the Middle East, including regional conflicts, led to temporary suspensions of flights to Dubai and Doha. However, the direct impact on Finnair's overall traffic remained limited. Instead, disruptions at two major hubs redirected demand to alternative routes, benefiting Finnair's Asian flights, especially in March. Jet fuel prices increased significantly from early March due to the Middle East conflict.

Finnair significantly strengthened its operating cash flow, which stood at 273.9 million euros. This strong liquidity supports the company's ongoing fleet renewal plans, including the order for 18 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft for delivery starting in 2027, and plans to acquire up to 12 used Airbus A320/A321ceo aircraft. The airline maintained its full-year 2026 financial guidance, forecasting revenues between 3.3 and 3.4 billion euros and a comparable operating result between 120 and 190 million euros.
