Finnish Authorities Halt Google Data Center Construction Over Environmental Review
Finland's Regional State Administrative Agency (AVI) has ordered Google to pause construction on two data centers in Muonio and Kajaani, citing deficiencies in environmental impact assessments.
Google's expansion plans in Finland have been halted by authorities due to environmental concerns. The Regional State Administrative Agency (AVI) issued a notice to Google's subsidiary Tuike Finland Oy, ordering a stop to construction work on data centers in Muonio and Kajaani. The halt is effective until proper environmental impact assessments are completed.
The decision affects all preliminary construction activities, including tree felling, soil clearing, and excavation. This comes shortly after Google announced a significant investment of $15 billion in Finland to build AI infrastructure, highlighting the project's importance to the company's strategic goals.
A Google spokesperson acknowledged that the project had not met the company's own high standards and that the authorities' concerns were understandable. The company stated it had complied with local forestry laws and conducted environmental surveys, and plans to undertake reforestation efforts covering 130 hectares in Muonio to support biodiversity.
Finland has emerged as a key location for major tech companies building data centers, attracted by its land and power availability, especially amid broader European energy concerns. However, this incident underscores the critical need for thorough environmental evaluations in large-scale infrastructure projects.
