Finnish Trust in Pension System Declines, Broader Welfare State Concerns Cited

Finnish trust in the pension system is showing a slight decline, according to recent studies. While over 60 percent of Finns consider the pension system reliable, only a quarter believe it will be able to pay pensions in the future. Even fewer are confident that pensions will provide a sufficient livelihood. Some surveys suggest nearly half fear the entire system might collapse.

This lack of confidence extends beyond pensions. The same study found that trust in social security and healthcare is even lower than in the pension system. Statistics Finland's Citizen Pulse survey indicates a decline in healthcare trust over the past several years. Younger generations increasingly doubt they will receive adequate care in old age, reflecting a broader uncertainty about the welfare state's safety net.

Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company notes that the pension system, however, stands out favorably compared to other social security areas. While decision-making regarding social insurance contributions and benefits has become more unpredictable, earnings-related pensions have remained relatively stable. The system has undergone long-term reforms through negotiations by labor market organizations, avoiding the volatility seen in other sectors.

The stability of the pension system is attributed to long-term reform efforts aimed at ensuring its sustainability despite demographic changes. Future reforms will focus on improving investment returns and increasing the proportion of contributions that are funded for future security. Despite growing uncertainty about the future, the pension system aims to provide a predictable foundation for a secure old age.
