Fire Departments Host Public Events as Part of Recruitment Campaign

Twenty fire departments across 13 states are opening their doors during and around National Fire Prevention Week (October 4-10) to the public. These events are part of a national effort, dubbed "A Hustle Worth Having," aimed at recruiting the next generation of firefighters to address an urgent need.

The campaign, created by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), seeks to highlight the fulfilling aspects of volunteering as a firefighter. The public events offer community members a chance to meet firefighters, tour fire stations, and learn about the demands and rewards of the service.

IAFC Volunteer & Combination Officers Section Board Member Jason Caughey stated, "We know sometimes it just takes one interaction with the fire service to change someone's life and inspire them to get involved." He expressed hope that these open-door events will foster meaningful conversations and educate the public.

Participating departments are organizing a variety of activities, including behind-the-scenes tours, demonstrations, and informational sessions specifically for potential recruits. The campaign has reportedly generated interest from departments nationwide since its launch in April.
