Fired OpenAI researchers claim dismissal over safety concerns

Three former researchers at OpenAI have claimed they were dismissed from the artificial intelligence firm for raising safety concerns, directly challenging the company's official explanation.

Mikita Balesni, one of the terminated employees, posted on X that he, along with fellow ex-colleagues Tomek Korbak and Jasmine Wang, believe they were fired for "prioritizing safety over the near-term interests of OpenAI as a corporation." An open letter co-authored by the researchers details their concerns.

OpenAI had previously stated that an internal investigation confirmed the individuals "mishandled sensitive information outside established company procedures." In a note from research leaders, the company reiterated that the decisions were not related to raising safety concerns but stemmed from a "significant breach of trust" beyond what was publicly stated.

The dismissals occur amidst a broader debate on AI safety and the potential societal risks posed by advanced AI systems. The former employees have expressed concerns that their firings have created an environment where staff are afraid to speak out on critical issues.

OpenAI also announced it is finalizing contracts with third-party safety assessors and will share details soon. Jasmine Wang expressed concern that without employees taking a stand, others may face similar treatment.
