The Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN) has launched a national campaign to create the first set of national cancer screening recommendations for firefighters. The campaign was announced in September 2026 as the country prepares to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
The FCSN emphasized that more members of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) have died from World Trade Center-related illnesses since the 9/11 attacks than were killed on that day.
This initiative by the support network aims to proactively promote the health and well-being of firefighters by developing clear, standardized guidelines for cancer screening. The goal is to enhance health monitoring for firefighters and facilitate the early detection of diseases.
The campaign is expected to provide essential tools for fire departments and individual firefighters in managing and preventing cancer.
