Firefox 158 Released with JPEG XL Image Support by Default

Mozilla has released Firefox browser version 158, enabling JPEG XL image format support by default. The update also enhances form filling functionality and adds CSS arithmetic support.

12 October 2026

Mozilla has launched Firefox browser version 158, with the key highlight being the default enablement of JPEG XL image format support. Previously, this support was only accessible via experimental options.

The JPEG XL format is positioned as a potential replacement for existing web image formats like WebP, JPEG, PNG, and GIF, aiming to offer improved compression and features. The browser now requests JPEG XL images by default in its HTTP Accept header.

Version 158 also brings improvements to the smart window form filling feature. Users can now complete forms more quickly when clicking on form fields or selecting to fill content from a source.

Additionally, the browser now supports CSS typed arithmetic. This allows for operations like division between values with different units but the same data type, using functions such as calc().
